Rebel Music July One 2025
Part of a special all-day unity broadcast on hearticalfm.com July 1st to mark International Reggae Day and also celebrate the 5th anniversary of the station. My first radio show in well over a year.
During my part of the session I took a look at what rebel reggae music is now and what it once was, gazing specifically through the lens of the current genocide in Gaza. Features songs from some of the few reggae artist willing to speak out in this time, man like Nixon Omollo, veteran revolutionist Scratchylus and Echoes of Hope from Indonesia. Canadian reggae band Conscious Underground come with a topical singalong track entitled Dirty Politician. Bob, Peter & Misty In Roots represent the gold school roots. Time is fast running out for Palestine as the western governments turn their focus to the smokescreen of demonising domestic direct action groups & rock stars. Make no mistake, the struggle is not only about the ME, but is actually about the freedom of expression itself, everywhere.
Doesn't make particularly easy listening but these things need to be addressed within the reggae community. Sadly the majority of nowadays artists are playing it all too safe and failing to speak out, lips moving but, in effect, saying very little...
Stand up for truth and rights now ites, strike while the iron is hot

ReplyDeleteGreetings from Thailand bredren thanks for the continued interest. The show is downloadable through the hearthis stream link - https://hearthis.at/old-timer/rebel-music-july-one/ just click on the d/l tab there. Nuff things to complain about in the world these days and it pains me to see most of the reggae world ignoring what's going on. I trust all's well with the I. Be blessed

Yessir glad all is well and yes indeed, I don't feel like I'm missing too much back home really, barring family and friends. It all looks a mess tbh, looking from afar.
DeleteYes the guys at HFM are doing a good job keeping the station on course. Some good new selectors have joined the station recently. No rewind though. I don't have the time and energy to commit to anything regular anymore. I still do the very occasional thing though 😉
Also after all these years I have finally kinda lost interest in the new music coming out. A lot of it sounds recycled and a bit hollow to me, especially the lack of real militancy nowadays. Having said that, I'll see if I can put a special on for y'all soon seen 🙏🏼👊🏼🇲🇱
