Rebel Music July One

Rebel Music July One 2025

Part of a special all-day unity broadcast on hearticalfm.com July 1st to mark International Reggae Day and also celebrate the 5th anniversary of the station. My first radio show in well over a year.

During my part of the session I took a look at what rebel reggae music is now and what it once was, gazing specifically through the lens of the current genocide in Gaza. Features songs from some of the few reggae artist willing to speak out in this time, man like Nixon Omollo, veteran revolutionist Scratchylus and Echoes of Hope from Indonesia. Canadian reggae band Conscious Underground come with a topical singalong track entitled Dirty Politician. Bob, Peter & Misty In Roots represent the gold school roots. Time is fast running out for Palestine as the western governments turn their focus to the smokescreen of demonising domestic direct action groups & rock stars. Make no mistake, the struggle is not only about the ME, but is actually about the freedom of expression itself, everywhere.

Doesn't make particularly easy listening but these things need to be addressed within the reggae community. Sadly the majority of nowadays artists are playing it all too safe and failing to speak out, lips moving but, in effect, saying very little...

Stand up for truth and rights now ites, strike while the iron is hot

Nice combinations from Richie Spice & Alison Hinds, Marcia Griffiths & Busy Signal, Tarrus Riley & Alaine and Jah Cure & Keisha Cole. Also features Gyptian, Lloyd Brown, Spanner Banner, Peter Morgan, Conkarah, Bunny Rugs, Mikey Spice, Roger Robin, Duane Stephenson, Mitch, Maxi Priest, Courtney John, Determine, JC Lodge, Junior Kelly, Sanchez, Beenie Man and Twin of Twins

Deh Pon Di Jolly Bus

Rewind Show on rastfm.com 1st Nov 2019
Deh Pon Di Jolly Bus
As we continue updating the archives after the 10th anniversary of this blog here's a selection of laid back reggae and lovers rock from 2008. Remastered and augmented to 2 hours

Continuous mix

We took our fair trade festival stall all round the UK for many years and so I originally made many of the early mixtapes to play at festivals & on the road. When I went on to start the blog in 2009 streaming hadn't yet taken off and so mixes were strictly for download had to be under 80mins to fit on cd. The shackles have long since come off with streaming and new technology so the mixes just got longer and longer...

Selections here were distilled from 2 original mixes -
Smooth Ride & Joy & Sorrow Showcase
Excursions on the January Morning (Free Willy), Love Potion & Drop Leaf (Don Carleon), Hard Times (Gibbo), Kemar McGregor's vibsy Drop It (No Doubt), Let Go (Rootsdown), Heavenly (Don Carleon), No Combo/Breakfast In Bed (Nicetime), Real Rock (Xterminator) and Fresh Ear's Guardian Angel

Some great tracks by German-SA singer Joy Denalane.
