Militant Roots Ina Discomix Style

Late 70s roots selection in a discomix style
1977-80 a golden era of militant and creative reggae music
Vocal & dubwise

Continuous mix 2hrs
Rewind Show on rastfm.com 14 Feb 2020

Its been great to revisit some of the music that we all loved best in our youth and I don't often play classic Burning Spear, Pablo Moses, Twinkle Brothers or Ijahman these days.

Features several excellent New Town Sound productions recorded exclusively for Trojan Records when the label belatedly turned to roots rockers during its final days. Also several superb Burning Spear and Royals tracks, not to mention the 'voice of thunder' Prince Far I. Big Youth's Political Confusion on the Love and Livity with the Jewels is pure fya as is the Observers' cut of Satta

Cover art borrowed from the Spear Institution 7'' sleeve
Watch out for part 2 coming soon...

Roots of Tamoki Wambesi with Roy Cousins

 TAMOKI WAMBESI IN ROOTS
with Roy Cousins & The Royals
Comprehensive selection of Cousins productions mid-70s to mid-80s. Strictly conscious vibes. Backing by the Roots Radics & the Revolutionaries (aka Force Of Music) and largely recorded at Channel One. As you'd expect Roy Cousins focused predominantly on vocal productions with their dubs though deejays Prince Far I, Jah Stitch, Baba Dread, I Roy and resident in-house chanter Charlie Chaplin spice things up. Watch out for some really serious dub versions...

Continuous mix - 2 hours 50 mins - 88 tracks.
Rewind Show on rastfm Friday 7 Feb 2020

The man likes to recycle backing tracks though he almost exclusively used originals, including classic Royals riddims. So no shortage of version excursions here; I had to be selective or we'd have gone on and on... While the mix is not in strict chronological order, we begin mainly with some heavy 70s roots before moving on to his popular roots-dancehall selections from the early 80s later on.

Four man group The Royals truly are one of reggae's most underrated and overlooked greats. They are a bit of an acquired taste and, like Prince Lincoln, can take a few plays to really penetrate but perseverance brings reward... With Cousin's deep & penetrating lyrics, his falsetto tones and the group's expressive delivery they rivaled the Abyssinians and Carlton & His Shoes and at their rootsiest were even comparable to the great Burning Spear.

Forming in 1964, they released only a handful of singles ska to reggae. They went on to record four LPs between 1977 & 1981 and three of these are real gems - Pick Up The Pieces (songs from 1972-77), Israel Be Wise and Ten Years After. They also voiced one masterpiece at Studio One - the original Pick Up The Pieces.

On-U Sound Breaking Down The Pressure Mixtape

On-U Sound - Breaking Down The Pressure
Adrian Sherwood, Singers & Players & Dub Syndicate
RastFM #LoveReggaeMusic Show 62 October 2018

Astounding vibrations from the On-U Sound collective..
A distictive sound, cutting edge technology and a top-ranking group of musicians built around Dub Syndicate's Style Scott & Flabba Holt made On-U front runners in the UK roots scene from around 1980 onwards with a series of classic 10'' 'DISCO PLATE' releases. Sherwood pulled together a select number af artists to form the Singers & Players, including Congo Ashanti I, Prince Far I, Bim Sherman, Creation Rebel & Mikey Dread, who released several lps & eps during the 1st half of the 80s

Sherwood formed African Head Charge with percussionist Bongo Iyabinghi in 1981 as a vehicle for his more experimental journeys and the label gained a big reputation for leftfield music, making lps with the likes of Lee Perry, Gary Clail, Tackhead, Barmy Army (!!), New Age Steppers & Mark Stewart & Mafia. A soundtrack to the 1980s stoner scene in the UK. He stayed with the roots reggae thoughout though, going on to work with Little Roy, U Roy and others. He also formed 2 Badcard with longtime collaborater Carlton 'Bubblers' Oglivie in the mid-90s

I'm really pleased to present this one. Coherently consistant vibes throughout. Selections run from about 1980 to 2006. Focus is on signature On-U Sound heavy roots but of course we journey off to the outta regions a few times...
Fulljoy people

One time in 1991 I was at a rave on the roof of the Himalayas in the hills above Manali, India. Sometime around the trippy dawn the djs decided they'd played enough and shut it down so i took over the system with my cassette copy of this then brand-new Lee Perry LP. The tekno djs hated it but you should've seen how the people skank so. Scientific dancehall!

Silverback Gorilla - Nu Roots Mixtape 2015

Silverback Gorilla Nu Roots Mixtape 2015

Latest conscious reggae selections & fresh ganja tunes on some killer riddim old and new. Named after the popular new indica strain. This bud looks so sweet you could eat it... 4:20 every day!

Highlights three massive new rhythm tracks. Oneness Records come with the Retro Locks, a rocking update of Bim Sherman's Golden Locks, with strong cuts by Iba Mahr, Dre Island, Mark Wonder and Glen Washington who sings the Sherman original. Gappy Ranks teams up with Suga Roy & Conrad Crystal. The Ram Jam - Fattie Fattie (Silly Walks) finally drops with big tunes from Chronixx, Ras Demo, RC and emerging singers Clay and Dalton Harris. Pure feelgood party vibes when Protoje meets Sara Lugo on I Really Like You. This riddim's gonna mash it up this summer. Inner Circle's relick of the Tenement Yard is already a hit for Chronixx. Assassin aka Agent Sasco does a hebalist cut inna wicked 90s deejay style.

Two Ghetto Youths Int. riddims here... Stephen Marley is on the Sun Is Shining while Wayne Marshall's controversial On The Corner is built around REM's Losing My Religion. Kabaka Pyramid takes a shot at 'mr politician man' on the same rhythm. Norris Man and dancehall-crossover artist Mark Balet also aim on Politicians and Running. Special request to the election-weary... Sudden Flight, the latest hit from Protoje's hot new album Ancient Future for Overstand, rides a crucial relick of the Gunshot alongside Jesse Royal & Sevana. Micah Shemaiah, Hempress Sativa & Jahkime whip up a roots session vibe on the Prince Far I/Adrian Sherwood Tempo version. The original from the Cry Tuff Dub Vol. 3 LP 1980 - one of the greatest dub albums ever - is in the mix. Levi Roots does an irie update of Roman Stewart's Rice & Peas

The MARCH TOWARDS LEGALIZATION seems to have inspired more than the usual number of weed tunes recently. After several cuts on the Tenement Yard we revisit Chronixx on the Cultivator from 2013/14 (Royal Order) with additional tracks by Bobby Hustle, Pressure, Sizzla, Mykal Rose and  Perfect's funny Smoke Alarm. Every day a four20! Chronixx also comes together with the Mystic Revealers for Herb Must Legalize Now. Staying with the same theme Protoje & Winta James' great remake of Zap Pow's Bubblin' Over is brought together here with the 70s original. UK dancehall artist Stylo G does a nice Sugar Minott tribute on the Mr DC. Jesse Royal cool up him nerve on the Diamond Sox (Notis) and Keida sips Ganja Tea with Rory Stonelove. Passenger Seat by RC is on a Penthouse lick of an early 80s (Junjo?) riddim. Its been killing me trying to remember the original. Was it the Wailing Souls? Can anyone help me with this one???
