Reel Up Rock Steady

Reel Up Reel Up!
More golden rocksteady hits
Tracks date from the 1966-68 heyday apart from a few later deejay versions on Treasure Isle by U-Roy, Dennis Alcapone & Lizzy (1969-72)
Wake the town and tell the people...

Continuous mix 2 hours

Duke Reid's Treasure Isle leads the way production-wise, along with Coxsone Dodd's Studio One, Bunny Lee, Prince Buster, Gay Feet, Joe Gibbs' Amalgamated, Derrick Morgan's Hop, Derrick Harriott, Byron Lee (WIRL), Merritone and some early self-releases from the Wailers on the Wail N Soul M label.

A few real rarities like Yours Until Tomorrow credited to the Minstrels but actually the Martinies. Very crucial harmonica driven 45 on Rio by Winston Richards (aka Winston Grennan) called Don't Give Up/Studio Blitz. Also a Frank Brown & The Consumates 7'' The More They Get/Do It Now produced by Derrick Morgan.

Coxsone Rock Steady 1967-68

COXSONE ROCK STEADY SPECIAL
Rewind Show on rastfm.com 14th June 2019
Many of the greatest and most versioned rhythm tracks ever were composed in the creative cauldron of late-60's Jamaica and a high percentage of them came out of the famous studio at Brentford Road. While real heavy musical improvisations were just getting started, the tempo slowdown from ska to rocksteady was already providing more creative space for musicians and singers alike setting the stage for reggae. Jumpy, melodic and easy on the mind, its long been my favorite style of foundation music.

Nuff rare and hard to find 7s & 12s on the Coxsone, Studio One, Supreme, Island & Scotty labels. Some of these tracks were re-issued in the 70s & 80s on LP or in discomix format with updated mixing that gives out a whole different vibe. You will spot it ðŸĪĐ😜

Continuous mix. 2 hours

Thanks again to the BRIXTON RAT for many of the rarest songs here that he ripped from pre. Blessed love iyah 🙏🙏🙏

The Heptones Keep On Pushing - Tribute

THE HEPTONES - KEEP ON PUSHING
Special tribute on the Rewind Show
www.rastfm.com 22nd Feb 2019

One of the most influencial vocal groups ever, Leroy Sibbles, Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn, came together in 1965. They went on to voice a long string of classic hits for Coxsone Dodd up to 1971 in rocksteady and then reggae styles. The 1st half of this mix is pure Studio One.

The trio went on to record essential LPs with, among others, Harry J's, Lee Perry, Niney the Observer & Joe Gibbs right through the 70s. Leroy Sibbles eventually left the Heptones to pursue a solo career in 1978 so roots man Naggo Morris was invited to step up & join the group. Their last really big hit came in 1980 - Mr Ska Bean'a with Alton Ellis - a massive tune!

Early 70s Roots & Culture Session II

 Early 70s Revival Session II
Rastfm #LoveReggaeMusic Show 61
More oldtime roots & culture vibes many again ripped from pre. Productions from Coxsone, Upsetter, Harry J, Observer, Glen Brown, Keith Hudson, Phil Pratt, Derrick Harriott, etc.
Mostly from that era but I couldn't help throwing down a couple of wicked versions from later in that decade...

Continuous mix. 3hrs.

A classic 45 from Niney - Leggo The Wrong by Astley Bennett (aka Roy Shirley) is a big highlight, what a voice! Sound Dimension's Congo Rock is a Studio One classic as is Glen Miller's Love & Understanding. Bunny & Ricky's Bushweed Corntrash is an old fave of mine and is surely one of the most poignant songs about a ganja drought ever made!

Early Roots Reggae 1968-72

One of my old mixes compiled in 2001. Big up Reggaesoullover...

Early Roots Reggae 1968-72

Collection of reality songs from the late 60s into the early 70s. Led by the likes of Count Ossie, Don Drummond, Joe Higgs and Alton Ellis (and many rasta musicians) and finding a home at Brentford Road - Studio One, influences from the Kingston Rasta communities like Back a Wall, Caribbean political awakenings and social awareness was increasingly reflected in the music. The ska optimism of independence soon turned to despondance & lyrics turned more to local everyday living conditions, while the music became less relient on US influences as artists looked to Africa for inspiration. Themes like poverty, inequality & justice were increasingly prevalent, laying the foundations of the 70s roots era to follow

I&I Never Get Weary 2015

I & I Never Get Weary

Its been a few months since I put a fresh mix out as I've been preoccupied with the Kaleidoscope nights, among other things. This one's built around my sets there last weekend when we failed to get a live recording on the night. A multi-era collection, mixing up old with new and nuff between... Starts with rootsy selections before moving onto more upbeat reggae-dancehall vibes later. Plenty version excursions & nuff big tune.
Vocal-deejay-dubwize

Juggling the Bucket Bottom (Fine Style/Freedom Sounds/Irie Ites) with a deadly new cut from Mark Wonder's fine new LP for Nowtime Sound. Penthouse come strong again with updates of  El Shaddai, Culture's Natty Never Get Weary, Miss Wire Waist (Impact/Penthouse) and Horace Andy's Every Tongue Shall Tell featuring a notable return to the mic stand for the Lone Ranger! Digital B does a ruff new relick of the Dub Organizer played here alongside older cuts on Digital B, Upsetter, Impact & Jammys. Other riddim like the Herb Family (More Life), Love Me Forever/Hit The Road Jack (Big Youth/Juggling/Star Trail), Chi Chi Bud (Joe Frazier), Doctors Darling/Night Nurse (Germaican/Island), Just Another Girl (Virgin/Impact) and Kayla Bliss' brand new single Red Hott mix up with the Alton Ellis original Can I Change My Mind (Coxsone/XTM Nation).
We revisit three tunes here that always go down very well in the dance - World Go Round by King Mas, Love Yourself by Mr Vegas and Angola by Jah Bouks. We end up dropping them almost every time we play out.

Continuous mix 97 minutes 75 tracks

Donovan Germain & crew have hit top form once again especially after Exco Levi's astounding Country Man LP for them this year. Penthouse records have the best vibe right now & are thus heavily represented here. For that we make NO APOLOGY. Nuff respect to all.
