Dr Roots' Tribute to Lee 'Scratch' Perry

Dr. Roots Roots Cypher Show #643

Tribute to Lee 'Scratch' Perry

Fine salute to the brilliantly chaotic Upsetter, moving between his much celebrated productions and his very unique vocal offerings from across the years. The Upsetter of all upsetters! This is the most complete & rounded two hour tribute that I've heard yet.

Broadcasting direct outta Greensboro NC each weekend, radio host & selector Brian Greene aka Dr. Roots always comes with a refreshingly rootikal, conscious & widely varied program. Nuff upcoming & lesser known, underground artists rub shoulders with all the roots legends as the doctor literally leaves no stone unturned! I for one always love to listen up... Consciousness and wadada love, Selah

Check out his  mixcloud for more episodes

Thanks & respect to the Doc every time... Word, sound and power!

Who Is Mr. Brown? Wailers Special 1968-72

In a mellow mood - time for some Peter, Bunny & Bob
THE WAILERS 1968-72
The Wailers were incredibly prolific in the years between leaving Studio One and signing for Island. Included here are no fewer than 70 key compositions but this is far from the full story. While of course Bob leads the way Peter & Bunny both also take turns on lead vocals. Productions from Lee Perry, Leslie Kong, Bunny Lee, Allan 'Skill' Cole + the Wailers themselves. Also included are some of Bob & Peter's solo work from that time (JAD, Joe Gibbs, Upsetter). Considered by some to be Bob Marley's best, most creative period. With the exception of two rock steady tracks on Wail 'N Soul 'M 1968 - Hurtin' Inside & Burial - this is a strictly reggae affair so lively up yourselves...

Summer Solstice Late 80s Free Festival Special

Summer Solstice Free Festival Special
Punky Reggae Party '89
Going back to another time and space... back to the heady days of free festivals, the convoy, 'new age' travelers an' all that... Focus is on bands who played the festival circuit in the late-80s, leading with RDF aka Radical Dance Faction aka Military Surplus.

Continuous mix 2 hours

The UK free festival scene that begun in the late 60s basically ended with Castle Morton in '92 after which our rights & freedoms were heavily curtailed. Years following Stonehenge 'Battle of the Beanfield' 1985 were marked by clashes with police & political activism in line with the Miner's Strikes and Poll Tax riots and were a last hurrah for the alternative lifestyle before pay2go culture completely took over. Hard drugs also took their toll. Bring back the old freedoms, squatters rights & some of that super hashish!

Massive respect to RDF.

The Heptones Keep On Pushing - Tribute

THE HEPTONES - KEEP ON PUSHING
Special tribute on the Rewind Show
www.rastfm.com 22nd Feb 2019

One of the most influencial vocal groups ever, Leroy Sibbles, Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn, came together in 1965. They went on to voice a long string of classic hits for Coxsone Dodd up to 1971 in rocksteady and then reggae styles. The 1st half of this mix is pure Studio One.

The trio went on to record essential LPs with, among others, Harry J's, Lee Perry, Niney the Observer & Joe Gibbs right through the 70s. Leroy Sibbles eventually left the Heptones to pursue a solo career in 1978 so roots man Naggo Morris was invited to step up & join the group. Their last really big hit came in 1980 - Mr Ska Bean'a with Alton Ellis - a massive tune!

On-U Sound Breaking Down The Pressure Mixtape

On-U Sound - Breaking Down The Pressure
Adrian Sherwood, Singers & Players & Dub Syndicate
RastFM #LoveReggaeMusic Show 62 October 2018

Astounding vibrations from the On-U Sound collective..
A distictive sound, cutting edge technology and a top-ranking group of musicians built around Dub Syndicate's Style Scott & Flabba Holt made On-U front runners in the UK roots scene from around 1980 onwards with a series of classic 10'' 'DISCO PLATE' releases. Sherwood pulled together a select number af artists to form the Singers & Players, including Congo Ashanti I, Prince Far I, Bim Sherman, Creation Rebel & Mikey Dread, who released several lps & eps during the 1st half of the 80s

Sherwood formed African Head Charge with percussionist Bongo Iyabinghi in 1981 as a vehicle for his more experimental journeys and the label gained a big reputation for leftfield music, making lps with the likes of Lee Perry, Gary Clail, Tackhead, Barmy Army (!!), New Age Steppers & Mark Stewart & Mafia. A soundtrack to the 1980s stoner scene in the UK. He stayed with the roots reggae thoughout though, going on to work with Little Roy, U Roy and others. He also formed 2 Badcard with longtime collaborater Carlton 'Bubblers' Oglivie in the mid-90s

I'm really pleased to present this one. Coherently consistant vibes throughout. Selections run from about 1980 to 2006. Focus is on signature On-U Sound heavy roots but of course we journey off to the outta regions a few times...
Fulljoy people

Giving thanks to Adrian Sherwood & On-U In The Area

One time in 1991 I was at a rave on the roof of the Himalayas in the hills above Manali, India. Sometime around the trippy dawn the djs decided they'd played enough and shut it down so i took over the system with my cassette copy of this then brand-new Lee Perry LP. The tekno djs hated it but you should've seen how the people skank so. Scientific dancehall!
