Ijahman Bunny Wailer Vaughn Benjamin & I-Wayne: Back 2 Back Part 2

By special request...

Four outstanding artists go toe to toe for this roots & reality session. Brings together two legends from the golden era of Jamaican roots music with two deeply original artists from more recent times as Jah music keeping on moving forward...

Continuous mix: 2 hours

Ijahman Levi emerged in 1976 with the Carry Jah Heavy Load & Jah Is No Secret singles, originally released on UK label Concrete Jungle before getting signed to Island in 1978 to international acclaim. Highly authentic & epic songs, deeply spiritual & personal self productions. Other true pioneers, Vaugh & Ron Benjamin & Midnite blazed onto the scene in the late 1990's with a completely new approach to roots reggae, both musical & lyrical. Vaughn reformed the group in 2015 as Akae Beka after Ron stepped back from touring. Vaughn must be one of reggae's most recorded album artists with literally countless albums of fresh songs (and there is more still to surface). Revered by many as a prophet & visionary its almost as though he was in a rush to get his messages out before his untimely passing at only 50 in 2020. He surely left us much to absorb & ponder over the coming years... I-Wayne made a massive impact when he hit the airwaves in 2004, especially in Jamaica where he continuous to perform to appreciative crowds. Songs like Life Seed, Living In Love & Lava Ground are deeply grounded nu-roots classics. Sadly he is under-recorded with only a handful of singles & 4 LPs & to his name, the last in 2012. Bunny Wailer was of course around right from the start, the mid-60's ska & R&B period, and remained active until only a few years ago - a stellar career stretching well over 50 years. Outspoken, controversial & somewhat reclusive Bunny was a true living legend in every sense.

Another selection of mid-late 70s roots reggae in a discomix style. I pulled out some crucial Bunny Lee productions for a change led by Horace Andy & Johnny Clarke. Also some classic African Brothers & Jacob Miller.

Also the No One Can Tell I About Jah (Cry Tuff), I'm A Levi (Tree Roots), Conscious Man (Keyman), Roman Soldiers (Top Ranking), Take 5 (Fatman). Rewind Show on rastfm.com 14 Feb 2020

Its been great to revisit some of the music that we all loved best in our youth and I don't often play classic Burning Spear, Pablo Moses, Twinkle Brothers or Ijahman these days.

Features several excellent New Town Sound productions recorded exclusively for Trojan Records when the label belatedly turned to roots rockers during its final days. Also several superb Burning Spear and Royals tracks, not to mention the 'voice of thunder' Prince Far I. Big Youth's Political Confusion on the Love and Livity with the Jewels is pure fya as is the Observers' cut of Satta

Cover art borrowed from the Spear Institution 7'' sleeve
Watch out for part 2 coming soon...

Hold A Medi 2016

Hold A Medi... Heartical Roots Mix 2016.
Fresh new roots selections mix it with a few choice cuts from down through the years.

Starts with an excursion on Overstand's Mile High with typically strong cuts by Morgan Heritage & Bushman. Linval Thompson gets back on the Train to Zion (Voiceful), together here with massive 90s cuts from Digital B. Misik Muzik's Creamy Corner is a killer update of the Ice Cream Love/He Prayed and lines up with Volcano originals. Warrior King makes a strong contribution with the hit Niceness. XTM Nation recently put out a long awaited set of old and new songs by Ini Kamoze. His cut of Ernest Wilson's classic Channel One riddim I Know Myself runs nicely with BDF's 2011 version (Heartical). Singer Irie Souljah mashes it up on a rocking cut of the Heavenless (Nice Time). Alpha Blondy's latest LP includes an intriguing duet with Ijahman Levi.

VP records have recently made another succesful foray into direct production lately collaborating with longtime producer Clive Hunt with great results - crisp vocal versions alongside textured dubs with an emphasis on a more traditional reggae sound like on their His Imperial Majesty, a relick of the Rod Taylor track from 2006 (Capleton & Luciano both get to voice it again). Two tracks from VP's excellent We Remember Dennis Brown set are here, including Crown Prince daughter Marla Brown doing a crucial take on Words of Wisdom alongside Mutabaruka. Serious...
So sit back, take a sip, tune in and hold a medi...

Reggae Tape - 1985

Reggae Tape. 1st of a pair of C90 mixes I made originally in 1985 from my record collection (& a good few I'd borrowed from mi idren dem). Mainly recent tunes from around 1983-85, a few earlier. Roots-dancehall & dancehall selections, JA & UK. 84-85 probably marked the end of the Bob Marley-Roots era when many roots stars enjoyed a last spell in the spotlight - alongside dancehall artists & producers - before digital dancehall emerged to shake up the whole scene. Rerecorded both mixes as the tape sound quality had decayed with time and use. I've tightened them up a bit and thrown down a couple of extra dub versions, otherwise leaving them as they were.

Riddim like the Unmetered Taxi, World A Music/World Jam & Fit You Haffi Fit (Taxi), Jogging (Tuff Gong), Don't Mess With Jill (Radic), To The Foundation & Let Off Sup'm (Music Works), Nice Time (Lion of Judah), In The Future & Junk Food (Alligator), Play Girl (Jahmani), Johnny B Goode (Word Sound & Power), One Draw (Shanachie), Shame & Scandal (Greensleeves), Heavenless (Power House & Fashion), Revolution (Time 1) and Faith Can Move Mountains (Twinkle).

Continuous mix. 90 minutes.
