On-U Sound Breaking Down The Pressure Mixtape

On-U Sound - Breaking Down The Pressure
Adrian Sherwood, Singers & Players & Dub Syndicate
RastFM #LoveReggaeMusic Show 62 October 2018

Astounding vibrations from the On-U Sound collective..
A distictive sound, cutting edge technology and a top-ranking group of musicians built around Dub Syndicate's Style Scott & Flabba Holt made On-U front runners in the UK roots scene from around 1980 onwards with a series of classic 10'' 'DISCO PLATE' releases. Sherwood pulled together a select number af artists to form the Singers & Players, including Congo Ashanti I, Prince Far I, Bim Sherman, Creation Rebel & Mikey Dread, who released several lps & eps during the 1st half of the 80s

Sherwood formed African Head Charge with percussionist Bongo Iyabinghi in 1981 as a vehicle for his more experimental journeys and the label gained a big reputation for leftfield music, making lps with the likes of Lee Perry, Gary Clail, Tackhead, Barmy Army (!!), New Age Steppers & Mark Stewart & Mafia. A soundtrack to the 1980s stoner scene in the UK. He stayed with the roots reggae thoughout though, going on to work with Little Roy, U Roy and others. He also formed 2 Badcard with longtime collaborater Carlton 'Bubblers' Oglivie in the mid-90s

I'm really pleased to present this one. Coherently consistant vibes throughout. Selections run from about 1980 to 2006. Focus is on signature On-U Sound heavy roots but of course we journey off to the outta regions a few times...

One time in 1991 I was at a rave on the roof of the Himalayas in the hills above Manali, India. Sometime around the trippy dawn the djs decided they'd played enough and shut it down so i took over the system with my cassette copy of this then brand-new Lee Perry LP. The tekno djs hated it but you should've seen how the people skank so. Scientific dancehall!

Jah Woosh Special - Chant Freedom Mixtape 1971-1981

Chant Freedom... Tribute to the late, great Jah Woosh, who passed away in 2011. 139 tracks of pure Wooshishness inna 12'' discomix style with vocal cuts, versions and King Tubby dubs. Backed by most of the 70s Jamaican rhythm sections and some from the UK, bands like The Morwells, The Aggrovators, The Revolutionaries, The Mighty Cloud Band, Skin, Flesh & Bones, Soul Syndicate, The Sunshot Band, Santic All-Stars, Rupie Edward's All-Stars and, later, The Roots Radics, Creation Rebel and On-U Sound's Singers & Players.

Jah Woosh made his name in the early 70s alongside contemporaries Big Youth, Jah Lloyd, I-Roy, Prince Jazzbo, Jah Stitch, Dillinger, Prince Hammer and Dr. Alimantado. Unlike most of these others he didn't use a trademark whoop or phrase that made him immediately recognisable and it takes a listen or two to ketch his style. He is perhaps best described as a CHANTER, with religious and spiritual selections his specialty (demonstrated on his frequent returns to Psalm 121). He is closest in style to Jah Lloyd (Jah Lion) and early Dr. Alimantado though at times sounds like U-Roy, Stitch or Jazzbo and adopts I-Roy's nursery rhyme delivery to good effect. He also tried his hand as a singer. Jah Woosh half retired from the music industry and repatriated to Ghana in the 1980s where he continued to control and re-issue his music on his Original label. He later resumed recording intermittently, doing occasional stageshows and soundsystems in the UK and Europe.

CD1 focuses more on the deejay's earlier output from 1971 into the mid-70s with some great productions from the likes of Rupie Edwards, Phil Pratt, Sidney Crooks, Keith Hudson, Bunny Lee, Leonard Chin, Dudley Swaby, Tappa Zukie, as well as the man's own releases after 1976. Also featuring Johnny Clarke, Horace Andy, Keith Hudson, The Morwells, King Tubby, Carl Malcolm, Junior Ross & The Spear, The Heptones, Bobby Kalphat, Keith Poppin, I-Roy, The Ethiopians, Creation Rebel, Errol Holt and Dino Perkins. Crucial riddim like Envious, Don't Think About Me, Miss Wire Waist, Irie Feelings, Party Time, Firestick, Letter To Mummy & Daddy, Fattie Bum Bum, Taxi, Buy You A Ring, Stalag...

CD2 is mostly classic roots rockers from the mid-late 70s onwards. More self-productions, particularly with the Mighty Cloud Band and Creation Rebel on Woosh's Original, K&B, Yard International and September labels, as well as releases from Striker Lee, Santic, Lloyd Campbell, King Sounds, Yabby You, Junior English, Tappa Zukie, Pete Weston, Jah Shaka and Adrien Sherwood. Features: Horace Andy, King Sounds, Ras Ibuna, Yabby You & The Prophets, Reggae George, Junior Ross & The Spear, The Twinkle Brothers, Dubwise, Errol Holt, Bim Sherman, Johnny Clarke, King Tubby, Dillinger, Jah Stitch, Prince Alla, Sly & Robbie, Jah Shaka, Singers & Players, Creation Rebel and Sis Bee. Riddim like Drum Song, A Serious Thing, Top Ranking, Please Be True, Love Forever, Blood Ago Run, Leggo Violence, Black Wadada, Zion Gate, and so...Extended versions of Blood Ago Run, A Weh You Come From, Diverse Doctrine and the almighty Jah Is The Ruler Discomix

Tribute to Jah Woosh... Jah Woosh & Ras Ibuna - Diverse Doctrine

I just found out that deejay legend Jah Woosh, real name Neville Beckford, passed away last month. He is reported to have died in the UK of cancer on February 11th, aged 58. He is probably best known for his late-seventies Channel One recordings, the Religious Dread LP in particular, though his initial releases early in the decade for producers like Keith Hudson, Phil Pratt, Blacka Morwell and Rupie Edwards were perhaps his freshest and most original. His work stands alongside the music of contemporaries Big Youth, I-Roy, Prince Jazzbo, Dennis Alcapone, Jah Lloyd, Prince Hammer and Dillinger.

After a long stint as MC on Prince Lloyd's sound system Jah Woosh recorded his first tune in 1971, Angela Davis, on Little Roy's Prophesy riddim by Blacka Morwell. His first LP, Jah Woosh, was released by Rupie Edwards in 1974 on Cactus. He went on to voice LPs and singles for several other producers (Leonard Chin, Dudley Swarby, Dread & Dread, Brad Osbourne, Sidney Crooks) while setting up in self-production. The first of several of his self-produced LPs, Dreadlocks Affair with the Mighty Cloud Band, came out in 1976. He went on to release many productions on his Original Music label into the 1990s, working with Larry Marshall, Reggae George, Bim Sherman, Trinity, Flabba Holt and Horace Andy among others. The 1978 12'' with Ras Ibuna - Diverse Doctrine/Pay Dem Dues was an absolute roots classic. A move to the UK in 1979 began a long lasting collaboration with the musical collective Creation Rebel, recording the Marijuana World Tour LP and playing live. A creative association was also formed with Adrien Sherwood's On-U Sound and Jah Woosh contributed to several projects with Creation Rebel, New Age Steppas and Singers & Players, alongside fellow chanters Prince Far-I and Prince Hammer.

By the late 80s disillusionment with digital music and the industry sparked a move to Ghana where Woosh continued to run Original Music and do local things. He was coaxed out of 'retirement' from time to time in the 1990s, doing some sound nights and stage shows in the UK and releasing an album with Mixman (Fire Inna Blackamix) in 1993. He continued to perform live right up until last year. I was lucky to check him live in London twice in the 1990s, sharing the stage with various 70s toasters and singers. He was a lively performer and treated the audience to some classic mid-late seventies roots n culture with obvious enjoyment....
