40 Years of UB40 - Puppascal & Paul Rootsical Pay Tribute

UB40 TRIBUTE UNITY SPECIAL

Selector Puppa Scal & Siamrootsical come together again, this time to mark the 40th anniversary of the Brummie outfit hitting the big time (and signing off 😃) with their 1st album. Selections run from 1980 to 2003, omitting anything from after the band split into two groups. There's a few b-sides and rarities like the vocal cut of Sufferin' by Nya & Natty, Astro chant One A Penny & some Mikey Dread dubs.

Ten back2back 15mins sets in unity 💚💛💗

While Puppascal comes from Paris & I Newcastle, we are both the same age... the UB40 generation; me in more ways than one ha! Formative sounds from our early youth. So it was a real joy to both of us doing this session. Plenty good old left wing political songs and nuff hit song. Too many big tunes to play them all here but we try our best seen 😂 Thanks Puppa for the French edition cover pics & gig ticket. That stageshow must've been fya!

What's your favorite UB40 song anyone??

Free Jah Jah Children (Militant Roots 2)

Militant Roots Pt. 2
More tuff late-70s selections, again many in extended discomix format. The music was changing towards the end of the decade as the new dancehall sound began to emerge though roots & culture still carry the swing. UK-based reggae groups like Aswad & Misty In Roots also gained greater recognition bringing with them a whole different vibe

Rewind Show on rastfm.com 21 Feb 2020

Tracks mostly from 1976-80 though 2 or 3 were recorded earlier. Quite a few Joe Gibbs Errol Thompson productions, also some Channel One, Talent Corp, DATC & Rockers Int. releases. Check Ferris Thomas' heartical Set Up Yourself for Gibbs. Original 1978 7'' mix of Bob Marley's Rastaman Live Up.

One time in the 90s I came across a heap of reggae records at a junk shop in Turnpike Lane London. So I made a b-line for a cashpoint and bought up the whole lot: I ended up giving the man £70 for well over 200 70s & 80s lps & 12''. That was a day I'll never forget! Loads of really crucial stuff. Among them was the Ghetto-Ology Dub album JA pressing. I already had the vocal lp so I was made up. But what an organic album sleeve!!

This copy actually has a perfect inaudible scratch on one track that loops the beat and it always took me ages to notice. A visiting friend once noted 'man, that's a really psychedelic dub!' It always caught me out haha...

Hold A Medi 2016

Hold A Medi... Heartical Roots Mix 2016.
Fresh new roots selections mix it with a few choice cuts from down through the years.

Starts with an excursion on Overstand's Mile High with typically strong cuts by Morgan Heritage & Bushman. Linval Thompson gets back on the Train to Zion (Voiceful), together here with massive 90s cuts from Digital B. Misik Muzik's Creamy Corner is a killer update of the Ice Cream Love/He Prayed and lines up with Volcano originals. Warrior King makes a strong contribution with the hit Niceness. XTM Nation recently put out a long awaited set of old and new songs by Ini Kamoze. His cut of Ernest Wilson's classic Channel One riddim I Know Myself runs nicely with BDF's 2011 version (Heartical). Singer Irie Souljah mashes it up on a rocking cut of the Heavenless (Nice Time). Alpha Blondy's latest LP includes an intriguing duet with Ijahman Levi.

VP records have recently made another succesful foray into direct production lately collaborating with longtime producer Clive Hunt with great results - crisp vocal versions alongside textured dubs with an emphasis on a more traditional reggae sound like on their His Imperial Majesty, a relick of the Rod Taylor track from 2006 (Capleton & Luciano both get to voice it again). Two tracks from VP's excellent We Remember Dennis Brown set are here, including Crown Prince daughter Marla Brown doing a crucial take on Words of Wisdom alongside Mutabaruka. Serious...
So sit back, take a sip, tune in and hold a medi...

Very early Eek-A-Mouse outing - 1975 - on My Father's Land. The horns-driven Ras Ibuna & Jah Woosh Diverse Doctrine.is a major classic as is His Majesty Is Coming by The In Crowd

Reggae Tape 2 - 1985

Reggae Tape 2. Second of two C90 mixes I originally did back in 1985. They were great for hijacking stereos at sessions! Roots and dancehall tunes mostly from around 1983-85, some a little earlier. vocal, deejay & dub, JA-UK selections.

Includes my favorite current artists of the time like Misty In Roots, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Black Roots, Mighty Diamonds, Johnny Osbourne, Pablo Gad (I wore my 1st copy of the Bloodsuckers Showcase LP out!), Sugar Minott, Dennis Brown, Eek A Mouse, Ranking Joe, Lee Perry, Barrington Levy, Half Pint, Culture..... also the Saxon UK fast chat style from Papa Levi & Tippa Irie. We saw Tippa live this summer and bwoy, the man can toast fast still!! All the time the lyric a rhyme.... Riddim like the Water Pumping & Get A Lick (Prince Jammy), African Beat (Time 1), Heavenless (Black Roots), Gunman (Level Vibes), My Conversation & Real Rock (UK Bubblers), Hot Milk (Jah Screw/Ranking Joe), You Gonna Lose (Power House), Terrorists In The City (Thompson Sound), Bloodsuckers (FORM), Morgan The Pirate (Tappa Zukie), Roots & Culture (DATC).
