King Volts 1986

A lost favourite of mine from back when I was a youthman inna di Newcastle area. The original King Volts tape recorded on Tyneside around 1985-86. The reggae collective formed in 1982 in Fenham, Newcastle and were regulars on the Northeast gig circuit during the mid-80s, supporting visiting acts like Black Roots.  They became popular on the alternative scene and later the West Yorkshire reggae scene after a move to Bradford where they quickly built up a local following alongside their King Volts Sound System while traveling to play at festivals. Key members emigrated and, sadly, the band split for good after a reunion gig in 1988.

King Volts at the time of these recordings comprised Cess - lead vocals & song writer (still pops up on the music festival scene), Steve - bass guitar, Igger - guitar, Dan - drums, Jo - vocals and keyboards and Anna - flute, clarinet & vocals with Martin on the mixing desks. Anna's flute and Igger's classical guitar helped elevate the compositions to a whole other level.

Morgan Heritage 20 Year Tribute Mix

Morgan Heritage 20
Celebrating two decades of amazing music from the grammy award winners. Ever since their breakthrough hits for Bobby Digital in 1996 a new single or album release has always been a much anticipated event and when the Heritage roadshow come to town its just pure fyah... Troddin' in their late father Denroy's footsteps Heritage favour an uptempo, rootsy sound and are at their best doing tuff reality songs and inspiring spirituals. The band's grammy this year for the Strictly Roots album was long overdue and is seen as a 'lifetime achievement'' award. Its great to see them finally get the recognition they've so long deserved.

With such an extensive and essential back catalogue to choose from and too little space here, focus is more on singles and collaborations than on album tracks. Productions from, among others, Digital B, Jammys, Xterminator,  Flava Mcgregor, Kickin, Penthouse,  Massive B, Fat Eyes, Richie Stephens, Oneness, Jukeboxx, Don Carleon, Denroy Morgan and Heritage's own 71 Records, HMG and GTBC (Good To Be Conscious). Alternative versions by Cocoa Tea, Chezidek, Sizzla, Shabba Ranks, I-Wayne, Capleton, Anthony B, King Kong, Richie Spice, Beenie Man, Ras Shiloh, Bushman, the Marleys and Military Man.

Continuous mix. Two hours. 66 tracks.

Fyah Family Official Mixtape - Tony D Clutcheye Meets Mighty Lion Sound

Fyah Family Mixtape
Tony D Clutcheye Meets Mighty Lion Sound

Spanish Town artist Tony D is a cultivated songwriter with a sweet melodic voice similar at times to Wayne Wonder, Lukie D, Tony Curtis, Thriller U or Richie Stephens. Linked closely with Little Kirk and the Shocking Vibes Crew through the 90s, he has gone on to work with the likes of Black Scorpio, Bobby Digital, Stone Love and Creative Sounds, the onetime MC equally at home voicing lovers, dancehall and cultural sides. Tony D currently resides in Florida, building a solid reputation stateside and internationally as a performer and conscious artist.

Fyah Family features recent material including a series of strong reality songs like Everything About Jah, They Don't Know, Give A Little Bit More on Iron Gate Sound's Lion Inna Den (aka Baltimore) riddim and two tuff Irie Ites recordings: Dem No Loyal on the Diamond (Tonight) & Jungle Out Deh on the Soulful Spirit. A couple of specials for Mighty Lion, including a killer on the Heavenless.

Dactah Chando - Ansestral LP 2016

Dactah Chando - Ansestral 2016
Achinech / Boomrush Records  release

I only recently heard of Dactah Chando through this excellent new LP though its actually the 4th studio album by the Canarian rootsman singjay. Producer Umberto Echo creates a richly textured and varied soundtrack of upbeat roots & dancehall rhythm tracks with a definite African-world music flavour. Full horn section and backing vocals from Sara Lugo. The strictly positive, conscious lyrics and vybz are reminiscent of the legendary Chillian band Gondwana. Its a creeper that grows and grows on you with each listen. 5 stars.....

Hold A Medi 2016

Hold A Medi... Heartical Roots Mix 2016.
Fresh new roots selections mix it with a few choice cuts from down through the years.

Starts with an excursion on Overstand's Mile High with typically strong cuts by Morgan Heritage & Bushman. Linval Thompson gets back on the Train to Zion (Voiceful), together here with massive 90s cuts from Digital B. Misik Muzik's Creamy Corner is a killer update of the Ice Cream Love/He Prayed and lines up with Volcano originals. Warrior King makes a strong contribution with the hit Niceness. XTM Nation recently put out a long awaited set of old and new songs by Ini Kamoze. His cut of Ernest Wilson's classic Channel One riddim I Know Myself runs nicely with BDF's 2011 version (Heartical). Singer Irie Souljah mashes it up on a rocking cut of the Heavenless (Nice Time). Alpha Blondy's latest LP includes an intriguing duet with Ijahman Levi.

VP records have recently made another succesful foray into direct production lately collaborating with longtime producer Clive Hunt with great results - crisp vocal versions alongside textured dubs with an emphasis on a more traditional reggae sound like on their His Imperial Majesty, a relick of the Rod Taylor track from 2006 (Capleton & Luciano both get to voice it again). Two tracks from VP's excellent We Remember Dennis Brown set are here, including Crown Prince daughter Marla Brown doing a crucial take on Words of Wisdom alongside Mutabaruka. Serious...
So sit back, take a sip, tune in and hold a medi...

Negus Roots Special Part 1

Negus Roots focus mix.
Mighty roots and rub-a-dub classics from producers Robert and Michael Palmer.
Loosely centred around the Negus Roots 12'' collection, throwing various album tracks and rarities into the mix. This UK label released mainly exclusive Yard recordings (Channel One, Tuff Gong), alongside a few UK rhythm tracks after 1982 with session band Original Rockers. Part one covers 1980-82 with several killer sides from leading artists Junior Reid, Don Carlos and Lacksley Castell backed by the Negus Roots Players (essentially the Taxi Gang & We The People). Heavy-duty dub versions from engineer Errol Brown.
Resident deejay in rhe area Papa Tullo level the vibes throughout.

Negus roots used exclusive, mainly original riddim and didn't voice over or recycle much.  Two crucial takes of the Milk And Honey make a happy exception. Surprisingly good lovers rock interpretations of Rose Royce's Wishing On A Star and Barbara Streisand's The Way We Were by Rose Windross aka Rose Marie.

Continuous mix. 90 mins.

Tracks from various producers through the 80s to the present including some wicked specials.

Carlene Davis - I Remember (Boss LP 197X)

Carlene Davis - I Remember (Boss Records LP 197X)
Brilliant early album from the Canadian songstress. Produced by Sydney Crooks in the mid-late 70s?  Vintage, classic vocals over bouncy mid-70s rhythms. The outstanding track is a sensational duet with Johnny Osbourne - When I Call Your Name. He also does backing vocals on Right Time Of The Night. This surprise LP came into my possession quite by accident when i'd bought a large batch of reggae 12s a few years back. Included are 3 extra Crooks produced 12''s on Pioneer.

The Best of Prince Lincoln & The Royal Rasses Tribute Mix

Prince Lincoln Thompson Tribute Mix -
Love The Way It Should Be

Paying homage one of my favorite artists, the late, great Prince Lincoln. Brings together some of the best songs from throughout his solo career (1976-1997). Multi-instrumentalist Thompson is best known for deep, profound and slightly unusual roots music. Hit tunes Kingston 11 & Humanity (Neville King) have long been grassroots blues party killers complete with stunning version sides. Lincoln started out in rocksteady group The Tartans before passing through Studio One, starting his own label (God Sent) in the mid-70s and moving into self-production. Despite being signed up by Ballistic and then United Artists wider success eluded him so he wasn't very prolific, making a total of only 6 vocal albums with a smattering of singles on God Sent into the 1990s. Similar in style and substance to Roy Cousins & The Royals, Rasses music also takes a little time to penetrate but enters deeper and deeper into the conscience with each play. I wore out two of his lps (True Experience & Rootsman Blues) back in my youth.

Features several self-releases and collaborations with Daddy Freddie, Prince Jammy and fellow Tartans members Cedric Myton & Devon Russell. Covers of Bob Andy's Revelation and Bob Marley's African Herbman, Jah Live & Want More. All three of his amazing Studio One recordings are here.

Continuous mix. 2hrs.
