Anyone remember Black Beat International?

I subscribed to this monthly magazine from my local newsagents as a youthman in the mid-80's - a vital link, keeping me in touch with what was happening stuck up there in rural Northumberland. It also came with superb full page posters & centrefolds to help cover my walls haha.. A glossy alternative to the weekly Black Echoes newpaper BBI likewise covered all forms of music of black origin and while not quite matching Echoes for depth of coverage, it was a pleasing, wonderfully presented publication that looked fab up there on the shop shelves back then in the golden era of printed media. Just seeing all these covers again brings it all back... So salute Black Beat International!

This artist/group only recently came under my radar despite them releasing music since 2011. This is their 3rd full set. This EP has a real goldschool UK roots reggae sound reminiscent of bands like The Naturalites & Realistics or Black Slate. Great sound.

REWIND 1985!

LoveReggaeMusic Episode 4 - 27 May 2017

I've dusted off my 1st 2 C90 mix tape attempts from back in 1985. We revisit those vibes in episode 4. Basically an early - mid 80s roots & pre digital dancehall selection of JA & UK productions. The contentious idea that reggae died with Bob is thrown on its head as this was a creative, vibrant era in reggae music. Dancehall riddims sat easily alongside rootsier material prior to the rise of the Casio-built tune.

Productions from Prince Jammy, Volcano, Jah Life, Chris Cracknell, Power House, Clive Hunt, Taxi Gang, Roy Cousins, Clive Jarrett, Gussie Clarke, Lee Perry and others. Ini Kamoze, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Half Pint, Eek A Mouse, Mikey Dread, Pablo Moses, Mutabaruka, Sugar Minott, Papa Levi, Tippa Irie, Yellowman, Black Uhuru, Peter Tosh, Ijahman, Aswad, Steel Pulse, Johnny Osbourne, Misty In Roots, Barrington Levy, Twinkle Brothers, Rita Marley, Gregory Isaacs, Frankie Paul & much more..

Respect due to Mikey - the Brixton Rat

Reggae Tape 2 - 1985

Reggae Tape 2. Second of two C90 mixes I originally did back in 1985. They were great for hijacking stereos at sessions! Roots and dancehall tunes mostly from around 1983-85, some a little earlier. vocal, deejay & dub, JA-UK selections.

Includes my favorite current artists of the time like Misty In Roots, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Black Roots, Mighty Diamonds, Johnny Osbourne, Pablo Gad (I wore my 1st copy of the Bloodsuckers Showcase LP out!), Sugar Minott, Dennis Brown, Eek A Mouse, Ranking Joe, Lee Perry, Barrington Levy, Half Pint, Culture..... also the Saxon UK fast chat style from Papa Levi & Tippa Irie. We saw Tippa live this summer and bwoy, the man can toast fast still!! All the time the lyric a rhyme.... Riddim like the Water Pumping & Get A Lick (Prince Jammy), African Beat (Time 1), Heavenless (Black Roots), Gunman (Level Vibes), My Conversation & Real Rock (UK Bubblers), Hot Milk (Jah Screw/Ranking Joe), You Gonna Lose (Power House), Terrorists In The City (Thompson Sound), Bloodsuckers (FORM), Morgan The Pirate (Tappa Zukie), Roots & Culture (DATC).

Continuous mix. 90 minutes.

Reggae Tape - 1985

Reggae Tape. 1st of a pair of C90 mixes I made originally in 1985 from my record collection (& a good few I'd borrowed from mi idren dem). Mainly recent tunes from around 1983-85, a few earlier. Roots-dancehall & dancehall selections, JA & UK. 84-85 probably marked the end of the Bob Marley-Roots era when many roots stars enjoyed a last spell in the spotlight - alongside dancehall artists & producers - before digital dancehall emerged to shake up the whole scene. Rerecorded both mixes as the tape sound quality had decayed with time and use. I've tightened them up a bit and thrown down a couple of extra dub versions, otherwise leaving them as they were.

Riddim like the Unmetered Taxi, World A Music/World Jam & Fit You Haffi Fit (Taxi), Jogging (Tuff Gong), Don't Mess With Jill (Radic), To The Foundation & Let Off Sup'm (Music Works), Nice Time (Lion of Judah), In The Future & Junk Food (Alligator), Play Girl (Jahmani), Johnny B Goode (Word Sound & Power), One Draw (Shanachie), Shame & Scandal (Greensleeves), Heavenless (Power House & Fashion), Revolution (Time 1) and Faith Can Move Mountains (Twinkle).

Continuous mix. 90 minutes.

Progressive Youth - The Best of Junior Reid 1978-88

Historic Junior Reid hits collection, covering all the major tunes from his late 70's breakthrough, early 80's dancehall hits and long spell with Black Uhuru until his break from the group in 1988.

CD One: Progressive Youth covers the One Blood singer's early career from classic roots recordings for Augustus Pablo, through work with vocal group VOICE OF PROGRESS, to dancehall at Youth Promotions and King Jammy's in 1983. The Waterhouse singer came with a distinctive vocal style that incorporates Michael Rose-style chanting with the vocal delivery of the dancehall deejays of the day (not unlike understudies Yami Bolo, Little John and Little kirk). Producers include: King Jammy, Roy Cousins, Augustus Pablo, Delroy Wright, Hugh Mundell and Sugar Minott. Riddims by Hi-Times, Rocker's All-Stars, Black Roots Players and Negus Roots. Versions by King Jammy and King Tubby - discomix style.

CD Two: Chanting For Uhuru begins with Reid's final few dancehall sides for Jammy's in 1983-84 before joining outernational reggae supergroup Black Uhuru on world tour. Reid stayed with Uhuru until leaving in 1988 to resume his solo career. Uhuru's best tunes from this time are here, including some wicked live versions. Interesting to note that most of their better songs were actually re-licks of old Reid numbers...
