Year 2 Year 12'' Discomix Collection 1987

Year 2 Year 12'' Discomixes 1987. This series came out as a curious collection of mainly back-releases in '87 and precious little was fresh. No Jammys, no Music Works, no Techniques here... Its an eclectic mix of styles and periods, mixing up roots from the late 1970s, pre-digital dancehall and contemporary UK productions. Good listening, but hardly cutting edge at the time. Productions from Augustus Pablo, Tommy Cowan, Augustus Clarke, Willie Lindo and Kangal. 1987 contrasts sharply with the other Year-2-Year volumes in that it dips into the archives (no Jammys, no Tubbys here). Features the Winnie Mandela hit tune by Carlene Davis, interesting in retrospect...

ศรีราชา ร็อคเกอร์
Srirajah Rockers - Youth Explosion 2010. Debut album from the Bangkok roots reggae outfit. Inna typically laid-back, sabai Thai roots reggae style. 11 original songs and rhythms sung and deejayed in Thai and English. Live, spacious, guitar driven roots reggae sound throughout with some nice instrumentation and dubby echos. Irie flute and heavy bass. The title track is a wicked slice of rockers/steppas with a strong rockers drum pattern. Another milestone in the development of reggae music in Thailand.

Bibim Windy City Meets Srirajah Rockers EP 2010

Bibim Windy City Meets Srirajah Rockers EP 2010. Thailand's ศรีราชา ร็อคเกอร์ collaborate with South Korea's Windy City in an earth-shaking Asian dubwise extravaganza... Six tracks of international flavoured reggae and heavyweight, ambient dubs. Vocals in English Korean and Thai. The supurb Elephant Rider Dub utilizes a deep roots riddim over which traditional Thai hand drums and waen duel it out, morlam style... KILLA!!  Put Yah Lighta (Give Mi The Fyah) is another highlight, along with the single Sweet Reggae Music. A Bibim production.

BIG UP TERROR FABULOUS - TOP-RANKING DEEJAY IN THE 90S

Versatile deejay Terror Fabulous blazed out of the Mad House and Shocking Vibes camps in 1991 alongside man like Daddy Screw, Buju, Louie Culture, Beenie and Capleton and had a string of hits throughout the early and mid 1990s. Similar in style to Buju (without the rockstone voice) but with his own trademark pronounced intonation, Terror hit first with bogle gal tunes like Gwaney Gwaney & Dorothy and tuff reality tunes like No Retreat, No Surrender and Order. His 1993 collaboration with Nadine Sutherland, Action, was a worldwide hit, winning him a major label deal for an album. The excellent Yaga Yaga, produced by Dave Kelly, was well received but a return to the grassroots soon followed. He went on to record many great tunes for Penthouse, Digital B, King Jammys/John John, Fat Eyes, Xterminator, Black Scorpio and others, coming with more and more killer reality sides after 1994. Sadly the hits dried up by the end of the decade as the sound began to change and new names emerged and Terror Fabulous, along with fellow deejays Louie Culture, Terry Ganzie and Determine, seemed to drop out of the race

Siamrootsical Roots & Culture Mix 2011

Siamrootsical Roots N Culture Mix 2011

Rocking new roots, one-drop and conscious dancehall mixtape. Riddim like Blue Skies (Supa Hype), Sunset Boulevard (NCF), Know My Friends (EMG), Better Tomorrow, Johnny B Goode & Big Stage (Penthouse) and more cuts of Xterminator's vital Danger In Your Face. A  shower of good Cure tunes after a relatively quiet spell. Gyptian also, like the essential Kayla Bliss combination on Mr. Wicked. Rootsman Phil Watkis had a small hit a few years back with Know My Friends, a tune I first heard on a Rebel Salute DVD. Great tune but we'd like to hear some more from him. Lutan Fyah sound-alike Exco Levi's broke through this year and rides ruff again on Mr. Hammer. BIG UP Jesse Royal... the deejay crucial everytime! Another one to watch in 2012...

Total Reflection Of The Foundation - 90's Roots Mixtape 1999

Total Reflection Of The Foundation
Conscious new-roots vibes from the 90's over both fresh and vintage riddims.

Excursions on the Brass Gates and Do Some Good while Xterminator & Penthouse both revisit the Right Time (Comforter) and Death In The Arena & Freedom Blues. The Mighty Diamonds join Morgan Heritage, Beenie Man, et al. in voicing one of their best riddims with a new song, Jah Love. One of the most overlooked singers of the period, the former Black Scorpio & Shocking Vibes artist Raymond Wright shines on the powerful Critics Highway - the tune never left my turntable for a while in 1997. Shame we didn't hear much more from him at the time... Other productions from: Roof International, Black Scorpio, Taxi, Shocking Vibes, Fat Eyes, Life, How Yu Fi say Dat, Ffrench, X-Rated, Star Trail, Backyard Movements and Digital B.

T-Bone - Enjoy Yourself (Ska-Ville Thailand)

Skaville Thailand. Album from Thailand's long-time ska and reggae stars. This compilation includes hit tunes from across the years... King of Trombone, One Love, Ska Lover, Bongoman, Ska Rider... Mostly original material but breaks into familiar riddims like Train to Skaville and The Whip. BIG horn section. As the title suggests, mostly fun, hi-tempo party vibes here with some chilled-out rootsy reggae tunes. In Thai and English. T-bone still play regularly around Thailand and beyond. They were at Glastonbury and Womad in 2007 and play often at the Saxaphone Club, Victory Monument, Bangkok (can't believe the place is still going after all these years). They have recently worked with veteran rootsman Little Roy in both Thailand and JA.

Ed Carabao - Don't Cry: The Story of the Disposessed

Ed Carabao - Don't Cry: The Story of the Disposessed

Reggae album from the Thai pro-democracy protest-singer legend Aed Carabao (Ed) แอ๊ดคาราบาว released in 2001 to celebrate 20 years since Bob's passing. Outernational reggae, ska & acoustic songs, sung mainly in Thai with some English. Includes Thai language versions of No Woman No Cry & I Shot the Sherriff, while Aed does his own songs on the Waiting in Vain, Jamming and some original riddim. This is essentially a concept album, exposing the plight of homeless, nationless tribal people in the Tai-Burma diaspora in general and Thailand in particular. Much in the spirit of the Tuff Gong... Also features a lambast against poverty by Pongthep (another legend) and two bonus songs by the full Carabao band from back in 1993. Aed has been a founding member and front man for Carabao since 1980, releasing nearly 100 albums and underground tapes.
